Preamble---

John and Howard's Epic Post Covid Bike Trip 2021!

Road trippers planAnd so it starts....

Sooo, Jill sends me a text, hey nice bike for sale, check it out... Sale didn't happen, but got me thinking, Hmm - Road trip..... I reached out to Howard, and said, "Up for a post apocalyptic road trip"? Yes, says Howard! Next thing I know, bikes are booked for drop off, tickets purchased, and planning starts to take shape.... And yes, we are vaccinated!

Howard is really game, we do a park ride, and I think this guy is so mellow and comfortable riding, this is going to work out great! We both get into the planning, he and Jill get up at 4am to reserve park entry passes. I think the entire nation is jonesing to get out as many of the campground are already full... It is fun sending ideas back and forth, crazy map artifacts, like dropping bridges, worry about the heat of early summer...

The trip is really taking shape, Howard's great idea of Durango, and Telluride among the many suggestions look amazing and fun. Texts go back and forth between the two of us, sites, campgrounds, epic bike rides... John Kofel, a Hawaiian in the heart, lives in CO and rides a Harley, hope we can connect. Others have some great ideas, and it starts to come together.

Bikes are now checked out, oiled, watered and fed, they are ready to roll. New gear, love the communications rig we have. Along with some new camping gear is always a blast. I think (if I inhale for the next three weeks my old armored bike pants might fit (I hope to loose some more weight) and Jacket still fits...

My turning 50 midlife crisis had me thinking of a bike trip to Prudhoe bay, hey why not. (see Prudhoe bay page) Fast forward many miles, audio books, great people, camping and amazing sites, I finally, picked up my bike at Harpers on August 4th, 2016, after 11,109 miles driven over seven weeks and a giant smile on my face. And so makes the trip of a lifetime. But where do we start, Road trip 2021....

(or lessons learned)

  • Don't sweat the small stuff...
  • Plan ahead, but not to much. Don't get caught up in what you have to do, enjoy the ride.
  • This time, I'm leaving much more behind, no giant SLR and lenses, chargers, etc., espresso maker, 3 sets of jeans... Keep it simple. Phone and laptop...
  • Meet people, this world is full of great and wonderful people.
  • Follow the weather, but make alternative plans, be ready for change.
  • Pack light, do you really need to three sets of jeans, 6 shirts...
  • Follow the pages as they are updated.
